Police Cpl. Mohamed Said gave his life in the line of duty in July — but his legacy continues to shine in the community where he was raised. Soon, that legacy will live on in a lasting way, as a new elementary school opens its doors bearing his name.
“He brought so much kindness, compassion, and a smile that could light up any room,” said Superintendent Ryan Vranesich of Melvindale-Northern Allen Park Public Schools. “He came here and made this place better.”
Vranesich, who once served as principal when Said was a student, recalled the young man who grew up in the city.
“He was an example to all of our kids,” Vranesich said. “The kind of student you hope your own children grow up to be — positive, humble, and committed to serving others. While he was here, he was a bright light.”
That light will continue to shine through the next generation. The district announced that its new 4th and 5th grade elementary school — set to open in fall 2025 on the former Strong Middle School site — will be named Mohamed Said Elementary.
“We couldn’t think of a more fitting name for that building,” Vranesich said. “Everyone recognizes the tragedy of what happened and the ultimate sacrifice he made to protect the community. But this is also about his life — the way he lived, the way he inspired, and the way he continues to guide us forward.”
The community of Melvindale lined up to pay their respects as hundreds of law enforcement from across the state of Michigan came together to escort fallen Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said for the final time.
Corporal Mohamed "Moe" Said
Mohamed Said, known to many as Moe, was born in 1998 in the mountain heights of Benny Qais, Juban, in Yemen’s Al-Daleh Governorate. From a young age, Moe’s life was shaped by the resilience and perseverance of his family. Like many immigrants in search of safety, opportunity, and a better future, Moe and his family left their homeland and immigrated to the United States. They eventually settled in the City of Melvindale, Michigan, where Moe grew up, went to school, and built his life. As an immigrant, Moe experienced firsthand the struggles of adapting to a new culture while honoring his roots. Despite challenges, he was determined to succeed and to give back. From early on, he displayed a deep desire to serve his community, consistently working hard to help others in any way he could. Following his graduation from the police academy, Moe fulfilled his lifelong dream of public service by joining the Melvindale Police Department. Through dedication and commitment, he rose to the rank of Corporal within just 14 months of service. His career, though tragically short, reflected his devotion to duty and his selfless spirit. On that fateful day, near the intersection of Oakwood Boulevard and Dix Road, Corporal Said was shot and killed while pursuing a suspect at 11:38 a.m. Officers had been dispatched to a call at a nearby carwash. When Corporal Said arrived, he bravely pursued one of the subjects, who opened fire and fatally wounded him. The suspect—recently paroled—fled on a stolen bicycle but was captured the next day after an intensive manhunt involving local, county, and federal agencies. In a powerful symbol of justice, the very handcuffs Corporal Said once carried were used to secure the man charged with his murder, as well as weapons and drug offenses. Corporal Mohamed Said was only 26 years old. He served the Melvindale Police Department with honor for 1 year and 2 months, proudly wearing Badge #10. He is survived by his parents and younger siblings, who carry forward his memory and the values he lived by. Moe’s journey—from the highlands of Yemen to the streets of Melvindale—stands as a testament to the immigrant struggle, resilience, and the pursuit of the American dream. His life reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who come to this country not only to build a better life for themselves, but also to serve and protect the communities they adopt as their own.
